PRIVACY BY DESIGN

PDF Text Extraction: Processed in Your Browser

PDF.js extracts document text in your browser tab. The speech engine is provided by your browser or operating system, so review your device voice and privacy settings when working with sensitive documents.

🛡️

In-Browser PDF Text Extraction

PDF.js reads the selected file in this browser tab and extracts selectable text for the reader. The page loads its PDF libraries from public CDNs, so an internet connection is needed to load the tool.

🧹

Temporary Browser Session

The tool does not send the selected PDF to a PDF-processing upload endpoint. The document is held in browser memory while it is being read; close or refresh the tab when you have finished.

⚖️

Check Your Device Voice Privacy

The Web Speech API uses voices supplied by your browser or operating system. Some devices may use network-provided voices, so voice processing privacy depends on your device and selected voice.

COMPLETE GUIDE & SPECIFICATIONS

The Complete Guide to Reading PDF Text Aloud

Everything you need to know about technical execution, page formatting, structural integrity, and best practices.

1

How the PDF Voice Reader Works

Extract selectable text, then read it aloud

PDF.js reads the text layer stored in a PDF. The reader divides extracted text into sentences and sends each sentence to the browser’s Web Speech API. The active sentence is highlighted during playback.

  • Text extraction: Works with PDFs that contain selectable text.
  • Voice playback: Uses voices made available by the browser or operating system.
  • Transcript export: Download extracted text as TXT or Markdown.
2

How to Read a PDF Aloud

A simple workflow for books, notes, and reports

  1. Choose a PDF file or drop it into the upload area.
  2. Wait while the reader extracts text from each page.
  3. Select a voice, set the speed and pitch, then press Play.
  4. Use sentence and page controls to move through the document.
  5. Download extracted text in TXT or Markdown format if needed.
3

Text PDFs vs Scanned PDFs

Why some pages cannot be read yet

A text-based PDF contains selectable characters that PDF.js can extract. A scanned PDF often contains only page images, so there may be no text for the voice reader to speak.

If a scanned document produces an empty page, use an OCR PDF tool first. Upload the searchable result after OCR has added a text layer. OCR accuracy depends on image quality, language, and page layout.

4

Voices, Languages, and Playback Settings

Available options depend on your device

The voice menu lists voices exposed by your browser and operating system. Some devices offer more languages and accents than others. Reading speed and pitch are passed to the speech engine, but sound and voice quality are controlled by the selected system voice.

For best results, choose a voice that matches the language of your PDF. Mixed-language documents may need a different voice for some sections.

5

Privacy and Technical Limitations

Know what happens in your browser

The selected PDF is parsed in the browser and is not sent to a PDF-processing upload endpoint by this page. The PDF libraries are loaded from public CDNs. Speech playback uses your browser or operating system voice engine; some voices may rely on network services, so check the privacy settings for your chosen voice.

  • Password-protected PDFs may need to be unlocked before reading.
  • Large documents can take longer and use more browser memory.
  • Complex columns, footnotes, and tables may not be extracted in reading order.
  • This tool reads text aloud; it does not create MP3 or WAV audio files.

DIAGNOSTICS & QUICK FIXES

Common Issues & Troubleshooting Fixes

Encountering an unexpected hurdle with your document? Here are the most effective solutions and diagnostics.

📄

“The Reader Finds No Text”

Symptoms: A page is blank or says no selectable text was found

✓ What to do

The PDF may be a scan made from page images. Run the file through an OCR PDF tool, download the searchable result, and upload it again.

🔒

“The PDF Is Password-Protected”

Symptoms: The document cannot be opened for text extraction

✓ What to do

Unlock the PDF with the correct password using a tool that you trust, then upload the unlocked copy. Do not upload confidential documents to services you do not trust.

🔊

“No Voice Is Available”

Symptoms: The voice list is empty or speech does not start

✓ What to do

Check that your browser supports the Web Speech API, your device has a speech voice installed, and the operating system volume is on. Refresh the page after installing new voices.

📝

“Text Appears in the Wrong Reading Order”

Symptoms: Columns, tables, or footnotes are read out of sequence

✓ What to do

PDF text extraction follows the order encoded in the document and may not match its visual layout. Try a text-based PDF exported from the original source, or copy and correct the transcript before using it.

🔁

“Speech Stops or Does Not Resume”

Symptoms: Playback pauses unexpectedly or a voice becomes unresponsive

✓ What to do

Try pausing and playing again, choose another system voice, or refresh the page and re-upload the PDF. Browser speech engines can behave differently across devices.

💻

“A Large PDF Takes Too Long to Load”

Symptoms: Text extraction is slow or the browser runs low on memory

✓ What to do

Try a smaller PDF, close unused tabs, or split the document into shorter sections. The tool currently accepts files up to 100 MB, but practical limits depend on your device.

POWER TIP

Zero Data Scraping: The PDF is parsed in this browser tab. Speech playback uses your browser or operating system voice service, whose privacy behavior may vary.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding text-to-speech (TTS), narration accents, playback speed, and transcript export.

QHow do I read a PDF aloud online?

Upload a text-based PDF, wait for text extraction to finish, then press Play. The reader uses a voice available through your browser or device.

QCan I change the PDF reader voice and speed?

Yes. Choose an available system voice, select a reading speed from 0.75x to 2.0x, and adjust pitch where supported. Voice choices depend on your device.

QDoes the tool highlight text while reading?
