PRIVACY BY DESIGN

Zero Cloud Uploads: Source-dependent processing

Processing depends on the selected source and rendering engine. Local HTML export runs in the browser; public URL conversion sends the URL and rendering options to the configured server endpoint.

🛡️

Sandboxed HTML Preview

The preview iframe disables JavaScript execution and restricts navigation through its sandbox. This is a defense-in-depth measure, not a guarantee that arbitrary HTML is risk-free.

🧹

Sandboxed HTML Preview

Local HTML export runs in the browser, but source markup can reference external images, fonts and stylesheets. Those resources may be requested by the browser when the document is previewed or rendered.

⚖️

URL Renderer Data Path

The public webpage URL option is disabled in this release. Server-side fetching will only be restored after private-network and cloud-metadata protections are implemented and tested.

COMPLETE GUIDE & SPECIFICATIONS

The Complete Guide to Converting HTML Code & Webpages to PDF

Understand the difference between browser-based HTML rendering and server-side webpage printing, plus the limitations to check before downloading.

1

How HTML Becomes a PDF

The client-side path uses html2pdf.js and html2canvas.

For pasted markup and local HTML files, the page passes a rendered HTML element to html2pdf.js. html2canvas captures the page and jsPDF packages the result as a PDF. This is useful for simple static documents but may rasterize text and graphics.

  • It is not a full browser print engine and should not be described as vector-perfect output.
  • External assets may need network access and CORS permission.
  • Inspect the PDF for text clarity, layout and page breaks before sharing.
2

How Public URL Conversion Works

The public URL path is temporarily disabled pending security review.

The public URL option is currently disabled. Use the HTML & CSS editor or local HTML file input for browser-based conversion.

  • The browser code alone does not prove the server's renderer, retention or security behavior.
  • The backend must validate schemes, block localhost/private IP ranges, re-check redirects and defend against DNS rebinding and SSRF.
  • Only enable URL conversion after the endpoint has been security-reviewed.
3

Preview Sandbox and Untrusted Markup

The preview disables script execution.

HTML entered by users is untrusted input. The preview iframe is sandboxed without allow-scripts to reduce script execution risks.

  • Sandboxing is defense in depth, not a complete HTML sanitization system.
  • External styles, images and fonts may still load depending on the browser and source.
  • Do not paste sensitive content into third-party remote resource references.
4

CSS, Fonts and Pagination

Rendering support varies by engine and source.

The client renderer uses html2canvas, so CSS support and page-break behavior differ from Chromium's native print pipeline. Complex grids, fixed elements, cross-origin images and large tables may need adjustment.

  • A successful export does not guarantee pixel-identical output.
  • Use simple print-oriented layouts, test long content and inspect every page.
  • For dynamic pages and advanced print CSS, use the isolated server-side Chromium renderer.
5

Technical Limitations & Practical Guidelines

Practical checks for the source and exported document

HTML-to-PDF output quality depends on the source markup, CSS, external resources, selected renderer and browser environment.

  • Use print-friendly CSS and avoid relying on JavaScript in the sandboxed preview.
  • Check image and font availability, especially for cross-origin assets.
  • Review page breaks, margins, tables and long content in the downloaded PDF.
  • Public URL rendering is currently unavailable. Use the HTML & CSS editor or local HTML file input.

DIAGNOSTICS & QUICK FIXES

Common Issues & Troubleshooting Fixes

Common issues with webpage fetching, HTML preview, external assets and PDF export.

🔒

URL Conversion Fails

Possible cause: The server endpoint may be missing, unavailable, or unable to fetch the target page.

Recommended check

Confirm /api/convert-html-to-pdf is deployed and returns a valid PDF. The endpoint must validate URLs and block private/internal network destinations.

📦

Website Preview Is Blank

Possible cause: The target site may block iframe embedding with X-Frame-Options or Content-Security-Policy.

Recommended check

This is a browser restriction. Public URL conversion is temporarily disabled. Use HTML code or a local HTML file instead.

⚠️

JavaScript Content Is Missing

Possible cause: The local preview sandbox intentionally disables scripts.

Recommended check

Use static HTML/CSS for client-side export. For dynamic pages, use a trusted server-side Chromium renderer with strict isolation.

📐

Images or Fonts Are Missing

Possible cause: External resources may block cross-origin loading or require authentication.

Recommended check

Use accessible image/font URLs or embed assets as data URLs where appropriate. Verify CORS and network access.

📝

PDF Layout Differs from the Preview

Possible cause: html2canvas-based export may rasterize content and does not perfectly reproduce every browser print behavior.

Recommended check

Try simpler layout rules, check page size and margins, and compare with server-side Chromium output for complex documents.

🔁

PDF Download Is Empty or Invalid

Possible cause: The server may return an HTML/JSON error instead of a PDF, or the browser library may fail.

Recommended check

Check the browser console and network response. The updated script validates the response type and PDF signature before showing download controls.

POWER TIP

Batch Conversion Available: You can drop multiple HTML files into the workspace simultaneously to convert them in a single click, saving you dozens of minutes of repetitive manual exports.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about HTML files, webpage URLs, rendering engines, script execution and how data is processed.

Q Can I convert HTML code and local HTML files to PDF?

Yes. Paste HTML and CSS into the editor or select a local .html or .htm file. The client-side renderer uses html2pdf.js and html2canvas.

Q Can I convert a public webpage URL to PDF?

Public webpage URL conversion is temporarily disabled while the server-side fetch path is hardened against private-network and cloud-metadata access.

Q Does the converter run JavaScript from uploaded HTML?

The preview iframe is sandboxed without script permission, so page scripts are disabled in the preview. The client-side renderer is intended for static HTML and CSS. Use a trusted server-side renderer if JavaScript execution is required.

Q Will the PDF look exactly like the original webpage?

Not always. The browser-based html2pdf.js and html2canvas renderer captures HTML as a raster-based output and may differ for complex layouts, external assets, fonts and page breaks. Server-side Chromium printing can provide a different result.

Q Is all conversion processed only on my device?

No. HTML code and local HTML files use the browser-based renderer. Public webpage URL conversion is temporarily disabled. External resources and third-party libraries may make network requests.
