How Does PDF Merging Work?
Understanding internal page concatenation and document compilation
At a technical level, a PDF document is not a flat image; it is a structured tree of vector objects, font dictionaries, and stream data defined by the ISO 32000 specification. When you combine files with our in-browser merger, the engine performs non-destructive page assembly:
- Page Sequence Maintenance: A new PDF document is created in your browser's memory. Pages from each source file are copied into this new structure in the exact sequence you specified.
- Dimension & Orientation Integrity: Each page's individual bounding box (MediaBox and CropBox) is preserved. If Document 1 is A4 portrait and Document 2 is US Letter landscape, both retain their exact native dimensions side-by-side without squishing or clipping.
- Original Files Remain Unchanged: The merge process is 100% read-only with respect to your source files on disk. Your local files are never modified, renamed, or deleted; only a fresh, unified PDF output file is created in memory for download.
