COMPLETE GUIDE & SPECIFICATIONS

The Complete Guide to Resizing PDF Pages

Learn how paper dimensions, orientation, margins, scaling and page selection affect the final document.

1

How PDF Page Resizing Works

Practical settings and limitations

Page size is measured in PDF points (72 points per inch). The tool creates a new page with the target dimensions and places the original page content inside it using the selected scale and alignment.

  • Fit scales content proportionally so the full page fits inside the printable area.
  • Fill scales proportionally to cover the target area; content outside the page boundary may be clipped.
  • Stretch changes horizontal and vertical scale independently and can distort content.
  • Center keeps content at its original point size and positions it on the new sheet.
2

Choose the Right Paper Size

Practical settings and limitations

A4, A3 and A5 are ISO paper sizes. US Letter and US Legal are common North American formats. Custom dimensions are entered in millimetres and converted to PDF points during processing.

  • A4: 210 × 297 mm.
  • US Letter: 215.9 × 279.4 mm.
  • US Legal: 215.9 × 355.6 mm.
  • A3: 297 × 420 mm; A5: 148 × 210 mm.
3

Resize All Pages or Only Selected Pages

Practical settings and limitations

Use All Document Pages to apply the target dimensions throughout the PDF. Choose Current Page Only to resize the page shown in the preview, or enter a custom page range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10.

  • Invalid page ranges should be corrected before processing; they should never silently resize every page.
  • Pages outside the selected range remain in the output at their original page dimensions.
  • The output retains the original page order.
4

Content, Forms and Digital Signatures

Practical settings and limitations

The output is rebuilt from page content. On pages that are resized, content is embedded into a new page; this can preserve visible text and vector artwork but may not preserve interactive objects.

  • Forms, annotations, links, bookmarks, attachments and layers may not be retained on resized pages.
  • Rewriting a signed PDF invalidates its existing digital signature.
  • Keep the original file and compare the exported document before printing or sharing it.
5

Technical Limitations & Practical Guidelines

Realistic performance considerations for complex files

To maximize results with our in-browser optimization engine:

  • ✓ Already-Compressed Files: Documents consisting solely of pre-compressed JPEG scans or minimalist text may see modest file size reduction.
  • ✓ Severely Damaged Files: Repair can fix missing xref tables and corrupted trailers, but cannot recover pages completely wiped from disk.
  • ✓ Browser Tab Limits: For documents containing hundreds of high-res photos, ensure your browser has at least 1GB of free memory.

DIAGNOSTICS & QUICK FIXES

PDF Resizing Troubleshooting

If a PDF cannot be loaded or the output looks different than expected, check these common causes and practical fixes.

🔒

PDF will not load

The file may be encrypted, damaged, mislabeled or too large for available browser memory.

✓ Instant Solution

Try opening the PDF in a trusted desktop reader and save an accessible copy. This page does not currently provide a dedicated password-entry workflow.

📦

Custom range is rejected

A page number may be outside the document range or the range syntax may be invalid.

✓ Instant Solution

Use comma-separated values such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. Check that every page number is between 1 and the total page count.

⚠️

Content is clipped

Fill mode scales content to cover the target sheet, so content beyond the page boundary is clipped.

✓ Instant Solution

Choose Fit to keep the full page visible, reduce margins or use a larger target size.

📐

Content looks stretched

Stretch mode uses different horizontal and vertical scale factors.

✓ Instant Solution

Choose Fit or Fill to preserve the original aspect ratio.

📝

Some interactive features disappeared

Resized pages are embedded as page content in the output PDF.

✓ Instant Solution

Forms, annotations, links, bookmarks and signatures may not survive a page rebuild. Keep the original if these features matter.

🔁

The output is taking a long time

Large PDFs and high page counts require more browser memory and processing time.

✓ Instant Solution

Close unused tabs, try a smaller page range and use an up-to-date desktop browser.

POWER TIP

Non-Destructive Live Preview: You can zoom, rotate individual pages, test crop margins, and preview your layout in real time before generating the final document.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about scaling page sizes to A4, US Letter, custom dimensions, and content scaling.

Q How do I resize a PDF to A4 or US Letter?

Upload your PDF, choose A4 or US Letter, select a fit mode and margin, then click Resize & Export PDF. Review the generated file before printing or sharing it.

Q Can I resize only selected pages in a PDF?

Yes. Choose Current Page Only or Custom Page Range. Enter page numbers and ranges separated by commas, such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. Invalid ranges are rejected before processing.

Q What is the difference between Fit, Fill, Stretch and Center?

Fit scales proportionally to keep the full page visible. Fill scales proportionally to cover the target page and may crop overflow. Stretch can distort proportions. Center keeps the original content size and positions it on the new page.

Q Will resizing preserve text and vector quality?

The tool embeds page content rather than rendering it as a screenshot, so visible text and vector artwork can remain sharp. However, rebuilding pages can affect interactive features such as forms, links and annotations.

Q Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?

The supplied resizing JavaScript reads and processes the selected PDF in the browser and does not send the document to a conversion API. The page still loads PDF-Lib and PDF.js from third-party CDNs, so it makes network requests for those libraries.
